Friday, April 19, 2019. We had a private tour this morning at the Battle of Waterloo. We saw the museum, which was impressive with maps, items, a full room panorama, 4D movie and more.
We climbed the Lion’s Mound, which is an artificial hill built at the request of King William I of the Netherlands after his son (William II) was injured at this spot during the battle. The lion statue matches the personal coat of arms of the monarch of the Netherlands and symbolizes courage.
After our private tour, we watched soldiers explaining how their guns worked, I think. It was in French, and the kids seemed to understand much more than I did.
We also walked about a mile to Hougoumont Farm, which is where, many would say, Wellington won the Battle. On June 18, 1815, about 6,500 men died at this decisive battlefield site. A massive grave was dug here to deter thieves.
The trip back to the hostel was an adventure (combo of bus, train and walking). We were exhausted and decided to rest and catch up on our journals this evening.
